Tubal Reversal Is A Great Way To Regain Your Fertility

By Donald Wheeler

Tubal reanastomosis or reversal is a surgical procedure that is performed for the reason of untying, reopening or reconnecting the fallopian tubes of women who have undergone female sterilization surgery or tubal ligation. Although female sterilization surgery is supposed to be a permanent method of birth control, you may wish to get pregnant for a reason like having a new spouse among others. In such a case, you can opt for the tubal reversal procedure.

After undergoing female sterilization reversal surgery, your chances of getting pregnant will be high. A few factors like your age, the kind of sterilization surgery you have, how long your fallopian tubes are and how healthy your reproductive system is are considered to determine if you should undergo the procedure. Your doctor may also consider if you have previously undergone surgery for gynecological conditions like pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis and fibroids.

You can be a good candidate for ligation reversal if only a small part of your fallopian tubes were removed, if your tubes were closed using clips or rings, if you are under forty and if you underwent the sterilization surgery immediately after childbirth. Before undergoing this procedure, your doctor will recommend that you and your partner undergo complete physical exams. This is done to help determine if you can conceive after undergoing the procedure.

Physical examinations usually include blood tests and imaging to check the functioning of ovaries. A test known as hysterosalpinogram will also be conducted to check the length of your fallopian tubes and how they are functioning. This test is carried out using X rays and a dye or saline and air along with a ultrasound. The surgeon will request for a semen analysis test from your partner to check semen quality.

The surgical procedure to reverse female sterilization can be done at an outpatient center or hospital. You will be put under general anesthesia during the procedure. The surgeon will place a laparoscope though an incision in your abdominal wall and into the pelvic area so that he or she can look at your fallopian tubes to determine if surgery is possible. If this surgery can be completed successfully, the surgeon will make a small incision close to the pubic hair line.

The small instruments, which are attached to the slender endoscope, allow surgeons to remove any clips or rings used to block the fallopian tubes. The surgeon then uses stitches to reconnect the ends of the fallopian tubes to the womb of a patient. This surgery can be completed within a time frame of between one and three hours.

Recovery time varies depending on the surgical procedure used by a surgeon. If the surgery is completed using a microsurgical procedure, you can leave the hospital within two to four hours after the surgery. However, when other methods are used, you may be asked to stay in the hospital for one to three days. Resuming normal activities is possible after two weeks.

The risks of undergoing this procedure are rare. Examples include infection, reaction to anesthesia, bleeding and damage to organs that are close by. Your risk of having an ectopic pregnancy may also increase. To get the best results with tubal reversal, it is advisable to use the services of an experienced surgeon.
