Contrary to the past decades, construction of tennis courts is done with materials that will enhance their durability for a longer service. However, tennis court maintenance does not mean that they are susceptible to worn out as they also need to be maintained every now and then just to ensure that they are in good condition.
Firstly, courts need to be regularly cleaned to get rid of molds and mildew that usually accumulate around corners and shaded areas of the playing ground. Indoor courts need to be regularly vacuumed. Cleaning with water and detergents needs to happen once a year. The later needs soft bristled scrubbing materials. Doing this helps keep fungus and molds that come from decomposing food substances at bay.
Secondly, stagnant water needs to be drained frequently. If this water is left to stagnate, it will accumulate dirt which may stain and attract debris to the ground. Stains and debris may form a rough surface which in turn may be difficult for players to play on. Birdbaths should also be freed from water as soon as possible. In the same vein, foreign materials such as leaves and pine needles need to remove from the yard as soon as they drop. These materials stain the court and also serve as breeding grounds for mildew and molds.
Even though the surface needs thorough cleaning, it is critical to use soft brushes in order to avoid damaging the surface. The damage caused by hard bristles usually tears these surfaces making the court wear out faster than it should. However, the use of pressure cleaners is recommended in which case it should be set at 70 p. S. I.
Maintenance should also include damage prevention measures. These may include; not using marking shoes, not riding bikes and skateboarding on the yard, preventing people from dropping chewing gums and other food materials on the surfaces. At the same time, spectators and people visiting the playing ground should be advised not to drag chairs, benches and such items.
Drainage systems ought to specially be made to get all the water from the ground and hinder all the stray water from finding its way onto the yard. Materials that may block drainage pipes should be removed from these pipes early enough to maintain the flow of water away from the yard of tennis courts.
There is also need to keep all the grass and other vegetation to a certain level. Frequent trimming is supposed to be done on this vegetation. General landscaping is also important. This should be done from the time of designing the playing ground. The whole ground be mulched to prevent dirt from being blown onto the yard.
What is more, people watering the gardens and basically the vegetation growing around the court should ensure that they do not over-water so as to avoid overflow. This is known to cause formation of blisters when the water is heated up and evaporates. Finally, annual inspections should be conducted to ensure that the court is in proper condition and more so safe for players.
