Tips For Selecting Dog Obedience Training Videos

By Garrett McMahan

There are many reasons why dog training is important. Not only can you eliminate exasperating habits such as barking, chewing or jumping up on people, it is also a way to make sure your dog is safe in many different situations. A good training program not only can accomplish these goals, it also can forge a deep bond between an owner and their animal companion. It is important to select a viable program, so here are some tips that will help you select a great dog obedience training system.

You need to find a program that will address a wide variety of issues, but steer away from programs that promise instant success or state that with one magic command, your dog will be completely trained. Training for anything requires patience, and it doesn't happen overnight, so you have be willing to spend several weeks reinforcing the techniques in the program and be willing to use the commands your dog learns forever. If a program sounds too good to be true, it probably won't work or simply won't help you correct a variety of issues.

Many programs use treats as a way to illicit a behavior from you dog. Dogs do love treats, but what do you do when a treat is not available? Will your dog still obey your command if there isn't a yummy reward? It's best to use a program that does not rely on any type of incentive. Not only does your dog not need the extra calories, dogs love to please, and your love and attention is all the incentive they really need.

While it's fun to teach your dog how to shake your hand or roll over or jump through a tire, these are not essential parts of training. Skip a program that focuses on teaching tricks as part of dog training. You can always teach them a trick or two after they are properly trained for obedience. Look at it this way, being able to shake your hand is totally cute, but having a dog sit and stay on command can save its life in many situations. It's far more important to have a dog that obeys all of your commands and doesn't exhibit annoying behavior.

One tried and true dog training option is The Dog's Way. This program is handy because it is a DVD course, so you train on your own schedule. In addition, it addresses a myriad of skills rather than just four or five basic commands. Stick with this program and your dog will be able to sit, stay, walk next to you properly, stay quiet, come when called and much more. Not only will they be able to accomplish these tasks, they will do so forever, so you never have to worry about them jumping on a houseguest or darting out the front door. Imagine how much more fun you will have with your dog if he or she is obedient. They can be taken to more places safely and are more likely to be allowed at other people's homes or at pet stores and pet-friendly restaurants.

It is a sad fact that the animal shelters in the U.S. are crammed full of unwanted dogs and cats. When it comes to dogs, many times they are simply given away because they chew up things, bark too much and don't obey commands. Their disobedience is something you can correct easily with a little time and patience. If you are having trouble with your special dog companion, consider trying The Dog's Way and improving the relationship with your pet.
